DATA STORY: India's Covid tally up by 62,258 in highest single-day jump since Oct 16

India on Saturday reported a net increase of 31,581 in active coronavirus cases, the most in a day so far, to take its count to 452,647. That is 44.48 per cent of the September 18 peak of 1,017,754. India’s share of global active coronavirus cases now stands at 2.10 per cent (one in 48). The country is 8^th among the most affected countries by active cases. On Saturday, it added 62,258 cases, the most in a day since October 16, to take its total caseload to 11,908,910. And, with 291 new fatalities, its Covid-19 death toll reached 161,240, or 1.35 per cent of total confirmed infections.

 
With 2,605,333 more people getting Covid-19 vaccine shots on Thursday, India’s total count of those inoculated reached 58,109,773. The count of recovered coronavirus cases across India, meanwhile, reached 11,295,023 – or 94.85 per cent of total caseload – with 30,386 new cured cases being reported on Saturday.
 

• With a daily increase of 62,258 in total cases, the most in a day since October 16, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 11,846,652 on Friday to 11,908,910 – an increase of 0.5%. Death toll has reached 161,240, with 291 fatalities in a day. Now the eighth-most-affected country by active cases, fourth by fatality, third by total, and second by recovered cases, India has added 353,626 cases in the past 7 days.
• India now accounts for 2.10% of all active cases globally (one in every 48 active cases), and 5.82% of all deaths (one in every 17 deaths).
• India has so far vaccinated 58,109,773 people. That is 487.95 per cent of its total caseload, and 4.1807 per cent of its population.
• Among Indian states, the top 5 in terms of number of vaccine shots administered are Maharashtra (10238596), Rajasthan (10060605), Uttar Pradesh (9894674), Gujarat (8862380), and West Bengal (8812381).
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 41 days.
• The count of active cases across India saw a net increase of 31,581 on Saturday, the most in a day so far, compared with 25,874 on Friday. States that have seen the biggest daily net increase in active cases are Maharashtra (19771), Chhattisgarh (1989), Karnataka (1346), Punjab (1247), and Madhya Pradesh (1034).
• With 30,386 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate stands at 94.85%, while fatality rate has come down marginally to 1.35%.
• The Indian states and UTs with the worst case fatality rates at present are Punjab (2.91%), Sikkim (2.17%), and Maharashtra (2.04%). The rate in as many as 15 is higher than the national average.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 30,677 — 291 deaths and 30,386 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 0.95%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 0.4%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 132.2 days, and for deaths at 383.7 days.
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (36902), Punjab (3122), Chhattisgarh (2665), Karnataka (2566), and Gujarat (2190).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Punjab (87.07%), Maharashtra (87.20%), Chandigarh (89.20%), Chhattisgarh (94.22%), and Madhya Pradesh (94.38%).
• India on Friday conducted 1,164,915 coronavirus tests to take the total count of tests conducted so far in the country to 239,769,553. The test positivity rate recorded was 5.3%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases – are Maharashtra (13.86%), Goa (10.71%), Ladakh (9.05%), Nagaland (9.02%), and Kerala (8.62%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Maharashtra (23.55%), Chandigarh (12.76%), Punjab (8.25%), Madhya Pradesh (7.34%), and Chhattisgarh (6.94%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (718249), J&K (445965), Kerala (367658), Karnataka (317560), and Andhra Pradesh (285636).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (2637735), Kerala (1113722), Karnataka (981044), Andhra Pradesh (896863), and Tamil Nadu (875190).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported 36,902 new cases to take its tally to 2637735. The state has added 290,407 cases in the past 10 days.
• Kerala, the second-most-affected state by total tally, has added 1825 cases to take its tally to 1113722.
• Karnataka, the third-most-affected state, has reported 2566 cases to take its tally to 981044.
• Andhra Pradesh has added 984 cases to take its tally to 896863.
• Tamil Nadu has seen its tally going up by 1971 to 875190.
• Delhi has added 1534 cases to take its tally to 654276.
• Uttar Pradesh has added 1028 cases to take its tally to 611301.
