Green Tribunal asks Delhi govt, Centre to not buy diesel vehicles
Also questions Delhi's proposed odd-even formula for controlling pollution
BS Web Team New Delhi The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday has directed the Centre and the Delhi government not to buy any diesel vehicles for their departments. The tribunal has also recommended the ban on registration of new diesel vehicles to be extended to citizens.
The tribunal also questioned the Delhi government’s odd-even formula, where it has been proposed that private vehicles with odd and even registration numbers will be allowed to ply on the capital’s roads only on alternate days from January 1.
It said the odd-even move might not achieve the desired purpose of controlling pollution in the city and improving air quality. The tribunal’s contention was that the move could drive people in Delhi to purchase two cars.
