Valentin Yumashev, the son-in-law of former Russian leader Boris Yeltsin, quit his role as unpaid advisor to President Vladimir Putin last month, two people familiar with Yumashev's thinking told Reuters.

 

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Yumashev did not respond to a request for comment that Reuters sent to him.

 

One of the people, Lyudmila Telen, first deputy executive director of the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Centre, a foundation where Yumashev is a member of the board of trustees, told Reuters Yumashev had given up his Kremlin advisor role in April.

EU wheat falls on improved sentiment on Ukrainian exports

European wheat fell 2% on Monday, pressured by signs that Russia could unlock grain cargoes blocked in Ukrainian ports and on welcome showers in France, though volumes were light in the absence of U.S. markets closed for the Memorial Day holiday.

 

Benchmark September milling wheat on Paris-based Euronext was down 2% at 406.50 euros ($438.21) a tonne by 1530 GMT.

Ukrainian officials have sought a longer-range system called the Multiple Launch Rocket System, or MLRS, that can fire a barrage of rockets hundreds of miles away.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call on Monday that Russia was ready to facilitate unhindered sea transit of cargoes, including grains from Ukrainian ports, the Kremlin said in a statement.

Unlikely monkeypox outbreak will lead to pandemic, says WHO

The World Health Organization does not believe the monkeypox outbreak outside of Africa will lead to a pandemic, an official said on Monday, adding that it remains unclear whether infected people who are not displaying symptoms can transmit the disease.

 

More than 300 suspected and confirmed cases of monkeypox, a usually mild illness that spreads through close contact, causing flu-like symptoms and a distinctive rash, have been reported in May.

 

Most cases have been in Europe rather than in the Central and West African countries where the virus is endemic. No deaths have been reported so far.

The World Bank is planning to disburse USD 700 million to crisis-ridden Sri Lanka by re-purposing its existing loans, a move that will help the island nation grappling with an unprecedented economic crisis much-needed breathing space till a bailout package with the IMF is worked out, media reports said on Monday.

Sri Lanka is nearing bankruptcy and has severe shortages of essentials from food, fuel, medicines and cooking gas.

North American skies likely to witness meteor shower on Monday night

Stargazers and space enthusiasts living in the North American region are likely to witness meteor showers, according to NASA. Named 'tau Herculid' shower, it is forecast to peak on the night of May 30 and early morning of May 31. However, it is not a sure thing, the US space agency said.

 

"This is going to be an all or nothing event," Bill Cooke, who leads NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, shared in a NASA blog post. Meteor showers are caused by streams of comet and asteroid debris, which create many more flashes and streaks of light as Earth passes through the debris field.

Missing Tara Air plane found crashed, 14 bodies recovered

Rescuers on Monday pulled out 14 bodies from the wreckage of the Tara Airlines plane that crashed in Nepal's mountainous Mustang district with 22 people on board, including four Indians, according to a media report.

 

Pieces of the wreckage of the passenger plane that crashed on Sunday morning were found at 14,500ft in Sano Sware Bhir of Thasang in Mustang district in northwestern Nepal, after nearly 20 hours since the plane went missing, the Nepal Army said on Monday.

 

The search and rescue troops have physically located the plane crash site. Details will be followed, Nepal Army Spokesperson Brigadier General Narayan Silwal said on Twitter.
