SC wants Gavaskar as interim BCCI President

Also says Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals should not be part of IPL 7

The Supreme Court hearing the IPL spot-fixing case today proposed the name of Sunil Gavaskar as interim BCCI President in place of N Srinivasan till it gives the final verdict in the matter.

 

The apex court also said that Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals should not be part of the upcoming IPL 7. 

No employee of India Cements, which owns Chennai Super Kings, should hold any responsibilities in the BCCI, it added.

 

The court has given the BCCI time till 10.30 am tomorrow to respond to its three-point proposal. 
 

Earlier today, the BCCI told SC that it is ready to take disciplinary proceedings against those who figure in justice Mukul Mudgal committee report in the IPL spot-fixing case. The board also told SC that BCCI president N Srinivasan will step aside from his post to ensure a free and fair probe.

 

SC, on Tuesday, had come down hard on Srinivasan and had asked him to step down, adding that it will be forced to pass an order if he refused.

 

According to the report of the Mudgal committee, released last month, Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was found guilty of involvement in the illegal betting case. 

The IPL spot-fixing case came to light in May 2013 when former test player S Sreesanth and two local players from the Rajashtan Royals team were arrested on match fixing charges. In the ensuing investigation, Meiyappan along with Rajasthan Royals co-owners Shilpa Shetty and husband Raj Kundra were allegedly found involved in illegal betting.

The BCCI then formed a probe committee to investigate the matter. All three team officials mentioned above were given a clean chit by the probe committee. 

 

But things went awry when the Bombay High Court called the probe committee "illegal and unconstitutional". In reaction to the Bombay High Court's observation, the BCCI moved the Supreme Court, which then instituted a three member committee to investigate the matter. This committee, headed by Justice Mudgal, submitted its report to the Supreme Court in February this year.

 

According to the report, Meiyappan was a key official in the Chennai Super Kings team management and the report indicted him of involvement in the betting scandal. It also said that Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra's involvement in the betting scandal should be investigated further.
