Electric cars might be the next big thing on roads, but the US Department of Energy has predicted that vast majority of cars would continue to use gasoline by the year 2040.
According to the department's Energy Information Administration (EIA), 78 percent of light duty vehicles will still be sold with gasoline engines in 2040 compared to just one percent plug-in hybrids, one percent full electric vehicles, and just 5 percent standard hybrid engines.
The prominence of gasoline-powered vehicles is considered to be fueled by manufacturers building more advanced gasoline engines rather than changing their vehicle lineups, The Verge reports.
The EIA has predicted that tech which empowers more efficient gasoline engines will be a big deal.
According to the report, the US may not have to worry about depending on more foreign oil to produce gasoline as domestic oil production is forecasted to rise significantly until 2019.
