Tamil Nadu government would set up 25 fasttrack courts to hear cases relating to illegal land grabbing. The state recorded 8,947 such cases at the special cell in the last three months alone.
Chief minister J Jayalalithaa said that, of the 8,947 cases, 462 were registered, and FIR filed in three cases and 419 people were arrested. “Lands worth Rs 415.48 crore have been taken back from the illegal acquirers and given back to the original owners,” she said.
In the recent days, several DMK representatives have been arrested on land-grab charges. They include DMK MLA J Anbazhagan, who was DMK's south Chennai district secretary. The other senior leaders include former ministers Veerapandi Arumugam and K N Nehru and several close aides of Union minister M K Alaigiri, among others.
