Outrage, anger and disbelief followed today’s bomb blast in Mehrauli, a part of Delhi’s tony south district that claimed at least two lives and left more than a dozen injured.

The Bharatiya Janata Party demanded the resignation of the home minister as locals reported that two individuals on a motorcycle came and deposited a plastic bag in a corner of a crowded flower market that burst when a curious bystander — a child — tried to open it. The child’s head, eyewitnesses said, was severed from his body as a result of the impact.

The locality where the blast took place is not particularly wealthy, but it shook the rest of the capital as a red alert was declared. Earlier in the week, confidential intelligence reports had said interrogations of those detained after the last set of blasts in Delhi had indicated at least three other bombs had not been located and could go off any time. Presumably this was one of the three, suggesting two more are hidden somewhere.

Forensic analysis of the blast, described as ‘medium intensity’ by the police, is awaited.

There was no word from any organisation claiming credit for the blast at the time of going to press.
