The proportion of urban to rural population in Andhra Pradesh has increased to 33.4 per cent from 27.3 per cent a decade ago. This increase signifies a departure from the national trend. According to the 2001 census, both national and state proportionate urban population was around 27 per cent. This time, it grew around 4 percentage points at the national level. Of the total 84.6 million population in the state, 56.3 million people live in rural areas while 28.3 million people live in the urban areas, according to the latest census data released by the government. Between 2001 and 2011, the state’s rural population grew only 1.64 per cent where as the urban population increased 36.26 per cent.
