BJP has termed the present system of reservation in Sikkim 'disproportionate' and offered its own population-based formula for reservation.

The party which had submitted its reservation formula in the form of a memorandum to governor V Rama Rao, met him here recently to urge him to consider it seriously, party general secretary of the BJP's state unit CB Chettri said in a statement.

The party delegation conveyed to the governor that the present reservation system in the state did not take into account many demographic changes in the state in recent years and needed to be revised.

For instance, despite the addition of Limboos and Tamangs to the state's scheduled tribes list besides Bhutias and Lepchas, reservation in the name of scheduled tribes in education and jobs still stood at 33 per cent.

Pointing out that the four tribes "" Bhutias, Lepchas, Limboos and Tamangs- constituted 40 per cent of the state's population, they should get 40 per cent reservation as per constitutional norms.
