The Congress yesterday condemned the systematic slander campaign launched against former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in the Bofors gun deal and warned that it would not not tolerate vilification of its leader based on unsubstantiated allegations .
It appears from a section of the press that selective leakages with a view to malign individuals are going on in a systematic manner. We strongly condemn this attitude and urge upon the government to place all facts before the public so that the people know what is truth, party general secretary Meira Kumar, said in a statement.
She recalled that government had given an assurance to Parliament that there would be no selective leakage of the information in the Bofors papers to the press. It is unforunate that despite this, a malicious propaganda is carried on against the late leader, she said. She asserted that till date nothing has been found out which can contradict the assertion made by Rajiv Gandhi on the floor of the Lok Sabha that neither he nor any member of his family has received any money from the deal.
Besides, she said that the government itself has already mentioned that the name of Rajiv Gandhi does not appear in the list of recipients of commission as per the documents obtained from the Swiss authority.
