The government’s e-SHRAM portal On Wednesday crossed 80 million registrations. However, the government still has a long way to go as it has only attracted only a fifth of the total workforce.

Besides, five states have been responsible for nearly three-fourths of the registrations, with West Bengal alone accounting for a quarter of registrations.

The significant trend, though, is the female registrations. While India has had a low female labour force participation rate — it had further declined to 24.8 per cent as per United Nations Global Compact India study, 2020 —more women registered on the e-SHRAM portal than their male counterparts. A Business Standard analysis shows states, which have historically exhibited lower women participating in the workforce, also witnessed over 50 per cent female registration.

For the country as a whole, 51.66 per cent of registration came from females.  Of the total registrations from Bihar, 56 per cent were women. Similarly, in the case of Uttar Pradesh, 50.75 per cent of those registered on the portal were women. Only four states/UTs had lower female registration than the national average.

While two-thirds of the workers belonged to the 18-40 age group, 10.77 per cent of registrations were from those aged over 50.

The portal also details that of the total registered, 87 per cent had seeded their bank accounts. Agriculture was the top occupation sector, accounting for 53 per cent of the registrations, construction’s share was 12.19 per cent.
