In a bid to resolve the problem over sugarcane pricing controversy, the government is understood to be toying with the idea of amending the relevant ordinance by removing the term 'state' to ease the burden on the state governments on paying the farmers the difference in amount over the fair price.

The move comes against the backdrop of a combined opposition assault in Parliament over Sugarcane (Control) Order Ordinance that has led to the disruption of both houses yesterday and today.  Sources said the term state could be dropped in a four-line amendment.

"A bill could be introduced in Parliament amending the present Ordinance. There is no problem as that is allowed," government sources said. The House witnessed slogan shouting for withdrawal of the Order, which fixes a uniform Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) which would put the burden on states if the difference has to be paid by them.
