New 81-km railway line inaugurated in southern Haryana

Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Union Minister of State for Railways, K J Surya Prakash Reddy on Wednesday inaugurated a new railway line connecting the towns of Rewari, Jhajjar and Rohtak in southern Haryana.

“Besides connecting Rewari, Jhajjar and Rohtak, this line will also link southern Haryana with the northern parts of the state,” Hooda told reporters at the Rewari railway station.

“This project has not only connected Rewari with Rohtak and Chandigarh, but has also connected the area (southern Haryana) with the port of Kandla in Gujarat. This new railway line would give a big boost to industry,” he added.

“This new railway line will become a base of development,” said Hooda’s son and Member of Parliament from Rohtak, Deepender Singh Hooda.

The foundation stone of the project was laid on October 7, 2007. The 81 kilometre-long line has cost Rs 602 crore, half of which has been borne by the state government. There are five railway stations between Rewari and Rohtak including Gokalgarh, Palhawas, Machhrauli, Jhajjar and Dighal. The new train would directly benefit two Lok Sabha constituencies and eight assembly constituencies in Haryana.

“Haryana has got a new railway line after a gap of 33 years. We had last gotten a railway line in s in 1979 when Bhiwani and Rohtak had been connected,” said the chief minister.

“This line would be helpful for students as the traveling time to Rohtak University would be reduced,” noted Haryana Power Miniser Captain Ajay Singh Yadav.

Bhupinder Singh Hooda also urged the central government to start a Shatabdi Express train between Jaipur and Chandigarh.

Minister of state for railways, K J Surya Prakash Reddy assured that the Indian railways would further take into consideration the needs of the people of Haryana and try to expand and improve the railway infrastructure in close association with the state government of Haryana.

Hooda and Reddy later boarded the train and travelled in it from Rewari to Rohtak.

The Indian railways is one of the world’s largest railway systems with routes nearly 63,000 km long. It carries nearly 2 crore, 30 lakh passengers per day.
