Pollution board slaps notices on 8 industries

PPT and Bhushan Steel among offenders

The State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has issued showcause notices to eight industries in 2012-13 for causing pollution and violating the norms of the board.

Three other industries- Hindalco Industries’ captive power plant at Hirakud (Sambalpur), Singhal Enterprises Pvt Ltd-Hirma (Jharsuguda) and Shyam Metaliks & Energy Ltd-Lapanga (Sambalpur) have been served closure directions.

According to a factsheet provided by Bijayshree Routray, minister for forest & environment in the state assembly, Paradeep Port Trust (PPT), Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd (NINL) and Bhushan Steel are among the eight industries that have been put on notice by the pollution watch dog.

Other industries that have got the SPCB’s show cause notices include Maa Sakumbari Sponge Ltd-Kuarmunda (Sundergarh), Thakurprasad Sao & Sons Pvt Ltd-Kuarmunda, Laxmipathi Balaji Sugar & Distilleries Pvt Ltd-Cuttack and Shalibahana Green Energy Ltd-Nimidha (Dhenkanal).

In 2011-12, the SPCB had issued closure directions on 27 industries including Talcher super thermal power station of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Viraj Steel & Power, Adhunik Metaliks, Odisha Minerals Development Company and Sree Metaliks Ltd to name a few.
