The Orissa government will soon separate the educational infrastructure for the +2 and degree colleges in the state without compromising on parameters like quality of teaching and teacher-student ratio at the colleges.

The decision to this effect was taken at a high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in the presence of Debi Prasad Mishra, the state minister for higher education, culture and tourism and Madhusudan Padhee, secretary, higher education.

“The move to go for separation of +2 and degree colleges was initiated in 1982. The review meeting chaired by the state Chief Minister focused on ways to implement the separation without affecting the quality”, Mishra told reporters after the review meeting.

“The Chief Minister has called for a greater thrust on science and mathematics as well as skill development. It has also been decided to set up model schools in 173 educationally backward blocks of the state” he added.

It may be noted that the state has 50 junior colleges and 43 degree colleges and the physical separation of +2 and degree classes has already been achieved with seven junior colleges having their separate principals, said Padhee.

However, these colleges continue to share the same infrastructure and faculty members and their segregation will be done gradually, he stated.
