For his friends in the industry and to the world of cricket, he is a forward-looking person. A 62-year-old president of Baroda Cricket Association and member of the T20 governing council, Chirayu Amin prefers to make his mark by keeping a low profile. In fact, his appointment as an interim chairman of IPL after the suspension of Lalit Modi has caught many people unawares.
He is the Chief Managing Director of Baroda-based Alembic Ltd, a 100-year-old pharmaceutical firm with Rs 1,200 crore turnover, and a no-nonsense administrator.
“Unlike Modi, who has been hogging the limelight for his flamboyance, Amin keeps himself away from publicity,” said a source close to the development. Amin came into fame during the success of Ranji trophy where Baroda played well.
A science graduate and a master in Business Administration, Amin has been able to strike a balance between his zeal to expand his businesses and pursue passion for cricket. His competitors in business and cricket are unanimous about one thing, that is, his clean image. Amin has held the post of president of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the past.
The visibly calm new image of IPL immediately after the announcement of his appointment said cleaning up the T20 league would be his priority. “The game has just been concluded. We will start planning for the next year. That is the priority right now,” said Amin. He added that the IPL governing council would wait for Modi’s reply to the showcause notice. He has been given 15 days to explain.
“Once Modi replies, the council will look into it and will decide on a further course of action,” said Amin. He preferred not to comment on allegations against Modi.
