The mobile banking application of the country’s largest private sector lender, HDFC Bank, on Tuesday suffered an outage for an hour.

This is for multiple times that the mobile application and internet banking of the lender, which is already under the Reserve Bank of India scrutiny for such outages, was interrupted.

On Tuesday, the bank put out a statement for its customers saying, “We are experiencing some issues on the MobileBanking App. We are looking into this on priority and will update shortly. Customers are requested to please use NetBanking to complete their transactions. Regret the inconvenience caused.”

The bank restored the services within an hour. In another statement, the bank said: “Please note the issues around mobile banking app is now resolved. Customers can now use NetBanking and mobile banking app for transactions. We regret the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

Frequent outages had earlier promoted the RBI to prohibit the bank from rolling out any new digital offerings as well as any new credit cards. In a recent analyst call, Sashidhar Jagdishan, managing director and chief executive of the bank, had said the lender continued to work with the RBI to resolve the issue and at the same time build more robust platforms.

The first outage happened in November 2018, when the new mobile banking app crashed due to unprecedented demand to download the new mobile app. In December 2019, the bank’s customers again faced an outage with the mobile bank app. In November last year, the bank faced an outage at its data centre.  In March, the customers faced an outage in mobile and net banking services. In the same month, there was another outage in mobile and net banking services on account of a hardware component failure in one of the bank’s database servers.
