State Bank of Travancore (SBT) will recruit 2,500 persons this year in the clerical cadre for all its branches.

SBT has kicked off this recruitment drive, the largest ever by the bank, after a gap of 30 years. The bank had gone for such massive recruitment drives during 1970s and 80s through which around 1,000 people got recruited every year.

A senior officer told Business Standard that the bank was now on an expansion spree focusing on opening more branches. It had opened 100 branches during last three months and will open 100 more this year. This will take its network to 1,000 across the country.

Also, around 3,000 employees who had joined the bank during the 1975-80 period are likely to retire in the next two-three years. He said the latest recruitment drive was to fulfil the vacancies arising out of this. The bank is also facing serious shortage of staff in the officers cadre. This will be compensated through promotion to the existing employees. It is likely that this drive would continue for the next three years as the bank was facing serious shortage of clerical staff, he said.

Candidates, will have to appear for a written test to be conducted on October 7 and 14. Candidates can visit www.statebankofindia.com, or www.sbi.co.in under the 'Recruitment link' for online registration, last date for which is August 13, an SBT release said.
