Wholesale Debt Mart Trades Drop 13.3% In Q1

The aggregate turnover on the wholesale debt market (WDM) has declined by 13.3 per cent in the first quarter (Q1) of 2002-03 compared with April-June 2001 quarter. The segment had registered a 151.6 per cent increase in turnover during the Q1 of 2001-02.

The turnover on WDM aggregated Rs 1,84,417 crore in April-June 2002 compared with Rs 2,12,596 crore in April-June 2001, a drop of Rs 28,179 crore in actual terms.

The April-June quarter began well with a smart jump of 67.1 per cent in volume in April. The turnover on WDM soared to Rs 77,334 crore during the month compared with Rs 46,285 crore in April 2001.

However, the tempo could not be maintained in May and June. In May, the turnover declined by 36.6 per cent to Rs 53,246 crore against Rs 83,982 crore in May 2001. In June, the turnover it recorded 34.6 per cent drop in to Rs 53,837 crore from Rs 82,329 crore reported in June 2001.

The number of trades also dropped 3.8 per cent to 29,590 trades in the first quarter against 30,762 trades of the same period in last year. Government securities accounted for 91 per cent of the total turnover, of which top securities remained the volume driver. During April-June, the top ten securities accounted for 72.1 per cent (Rs 1,32,916 crore) of the total turnover of Rs 1,84,417 crore.

The 11.50 per cent 2011A government securities topped the list with turnover of Rs 32,309 crore in April-June 2002. The 7.40 per cent 2012 paper ranked second with aggregate turnover of Rs 23,842 crore, followed by the 9.81 per cent 2013 (Rs 20,720 crore), the 11.03 per cent 2012 (Rs 15,014 crore), the 9.85 per cent 2015 (Rs 10,811 crore) , the 7.49 per cent 2017 (Rs 8,451 crore), the 11.40 per cent 2008 Rs 6,500 crore, the 10.71 per cent 2016 Rs 5,445 crore, the 8.07 per cent 2017 Rs 5,006 crore and the 7.55 per cent 2010 Rs 4,816 crore.
