“The discussion focused on supporting Taiwan’s ability to participate meaningfully at the UN and contribute its valuable expertise to address global challenges, including global public health, the environment and climate change, development assistance, technical standards and economic cooperation,” the State Department said in a statement.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Monday at a regular press briefing in Beijing that “Taiwan’s participation in international activities must be handled in accordance with the one-China principle,” referring to Beijing’s position that both sides belong to a single China.
“Taiwan attempts to boost its influence in the world, but such attempts are doomed to fail,” he said, adding that the US should “avoid doing anything that would undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
