301 IIT Madras student get offers in first two days of placement

Ola Cabs offers the highest number of offers in the first two days of placement event

A total of 339 offers were issued by multinationals and Indian companies to the students in the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M). As many as 301 students got placed. On the second day of the placements, that is Tuesday, Ola Cabs issued the highest number of offers this year at 29. During the afternoon session that day, more than 16 companies issued 78 job offers to the students. GE India Technology Centre issued job offers to 10 students, Snapdeal to six, Times Internet to five and Rolls-Royce Operations India, VMware Software, and ARM Embedded Technologies to four each.

The IIT-M said the total number of offers that had been issued was 339 in the first two days, compared to 241 offers a year ago. The number of companies that participated was 57 against 49 a year ago. The total students placed were 301 during the first two days of placements against 214 a year ago. The placement details for the third day, Wednesday, were not available at the time of going to press.

The highest offer from a foreign company during the Day-1 recruitment was of $129,500 a year (around Rs 80 lakh), while the highest offer from an Indian company was of Rs 30 lakh, as per the announcement.

While students who received an offer letter were not allowed to participate in another session, some of the students had more than one interview in the same session, and some of them has received more than one offer letter.

It may be noted that Flipkart Internet issued the higest number of offers during the forenoon session on the Day 2, extending offer letter to 19 students, while Citigroup firm Citicorp Services offered job to 18 students.

As reported, the first phase of the placement programme is on till December 5. The second phase will be held between December 7 and 15. This year, 1,391 students have registered for placement - which is far less than last year's 1,435 students. However, the number of companies registered for recruitment has seen a jump from 372 in 2013-14 to 762 this year, out of the 1,000 invited.

Students have also opted for deferred placement for the first time this year, with 10 students opting for this. The deferred placement was announced last year, but there were no takers. Under the deferred placement programme, students who are pursuing business ventures on their own can sit for the interview next year.
