Goldman Sachs offers job to 13 from IIT-M on Day 1

The number of companies registered has seen a jump from 372 companies in 2013-14 to 762 companies in 2014-15

On the first day of placement in Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), 64 students were selected for job by multinational companies, both foreign and Indian, of which the highest number was selected by investment banker Goldman Sachs -- 13 students. The graveyard session, which is conducted from midnight to morning 6 am, saw 17 job offers being handed over.

This year, the number of companies registered to attend the campus recruitment has almost doubled while the number of students opted for placement has come down from last year, according to an earlier announcement by IIT-M.

According to an announcement by the IIT-M, Samsung R&D Institute India, Bengaluru, came second in issuing offer letters, by offering eight jobs, while Visa Inc and Microsoft offered seven jobs each and Shell India Markets Pvt Ltd offered six jobs. Indian conglomerate ITC offered job to five students, The Boston Consulting Group to four students, McKinsey & Company, Xerox Research Centre India and IBM Research India to three each and Auctus Advisors and Hindustan Unilever Ltd to two each. Works Applications, Japan offered job to one student.

During the graveyard session, which is in tune with the day time in United States, Google offered job to four students Microsoft offered three, while Services Now Software Development India Pvt Ltd, Visa Inc and Cisco systems offered job to one student each.

The placement programme, which started today and would be held on December 2 to 5 and December 7 to 15, has 1391 students registered as compared to the 1435 students registered during 2013-14. However, the number of companies registered has seen a jump from 372 companies in 2013-14 to 762 companies in 2014-15, out of the 1000 invited.

Students have also opted for Deferred placement for this first time this year, with around 10 students opting for this.

The highest offer from a foreign company during the Day 1 recruitment was of $1,29,500, while the highest offer from an Indian company was of Rs 30 lakh, said the IIT-M sources.
