The Goa Institute of Management (GIM), ranked as one of the top 20 premier business schools in India, has seen a 25per cent rise in average salaries of its students who are placed in the corporate sector as compared to the previous year.

A total of 116 students from the 2007 batch were offered lucrative jobs offers with a take-home salary of Rs 6.5 lakh per annum compared to last year's figure of Rs 5.20 lakh. The highest annual salary offered was Rs 9 lakh this year as against Rs 8 lakh last year.

"This year we got excellent placement with a total of 193 offers were made to our all 116 students with a higher salary and this is what a satisfying factor was for our students," Peter D'Lima, Director of the GIM told Business Standard.

Altogether 193 offers were made to the students, this year with the IT sector being the largest recruiter. Infosys Technologies,Cognizant Technology Solutions and IBM made 25, 24 and 11 offers, respectively. Whereas Accenture, Deloitte, Idea Cellular, HP, HSBC Bank,Hutch, Madura Garments and Tata Motors were the first-time recruiters this year.

The management of the GIM is thinking of focusing its teaching in non-traditional areas like manufacture and automotive component sectors.

"We are embarking on a high trajectory path by strengthening infrastructure and improving teaching methods," said D'Lima, adding, "The institute has been engaging the cream of visiting faculty members."

He further said the recruitment for summer internships was also on at full speed with bigger concerns such as Yahoo and Deloitte offering posts to their students with stipends as high as Rs 45,000 per month.

Anirban Sengupta, the placement coordinator of the GIM is of the opinion that the manufacturing sector is another sector besides the IT industry which is a premium growth area.

"This year there was a wide variety of jobs focusing on manufacturing and also on automobile sectors with well-known companies like TVS Motors, Ashok Leyland approaching us," he added.
