Panjab University hit the headlines on Wednesday as it got 226th rank among the top 400 Universities of the world in the 'Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2012-13'.
The ranking employs thirteen carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and objective comparisions drawn on the basis of feedback from students, academicians, University leaders, industry and government.
What surprises many veteran academicians in the Punjab is that the University has been acknowledged for its excellent performance of science and humanity departments for years, but could secure global recognition only now.
A senior academician in another reputed University of Punjab attributed it to the efforts of the the Vice-Chancellor's office for providing details of the research work being done in the university to the rating agency.
Set up in 1882 in Lahore (now in Pakistan), it was relocated in Shimla after partition and later set up in Chandigarh in year 1956. The Panjab University is spread over 550 acres and has 700 members of its teaching faculty in 75 teaching and research departments.
The Panjab University has 188 affliated colleges with three Regional Centres and one Rural regional centre in Punjab.
Seeking admission to the Panjab University is a dream cherished by all students in the region due to its colourful campus, beautiful landscapes, water bodies and the state-of-the-art buildings, the layouts of which were drawn by Le Corbusier, the French architect who had also designed the city of Chandigarh. But only the meritorious students finally get admission due to a stringent entry policy followed by the University.
The reseach work got impetus at the University as it got more funds from the University Grants commission in the last few years.
The University awarded 346 Doctors of Philosophy in the convocation this year.
