Imd To Procure 10 Radars Worth Rs 180 Crore

In a bid to strengthen the cyclone detection radar network, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) would procure 10 radars with doppler capability and a range of 250 kms (velocity) to cover the eastern and western coastal belts of the country at a total cost of Rs 180 crore.

While eight of these radars would cover the east coast, seven would be installed in the western coast giving more emphasis around Gujarat, an official statement said here.

Doppler capability would help IMD in determining the velocity precipitation and other quantitative aspects of cyclones, the release stated.

Plans have already been approved for the more effective doppler radars to be installed at Kolkata and Chennai before the year end, it said adding three of the radars procured with World Bank aid would be installed at Vishakapatnam, Paradeep and Machlipatnam during 2002-2003.

The cost of networking which would be through INSAT satellites would be around Rs five crore, the release added.
