At least 90 migrants are feared to have drowned off the coast of Libya after their boat reportedly capsized, according to United Nation's migration agency.

According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), most of the migrants were believed to be Pakistani nationals, the Telegraph reported.

The IOM said in a statement, "Around 10 bodies are reported to have washed up on Libyan shores near the town of Zuwara."

It added that out of the ten bodies recovered, two of them were Libyans, while the remaining eight were Pakistanis.

In recent years, hundreds of thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa have been rescued from the Mediterranean Sea. They seek to reach Europe to escape armed conflicts in their respective countries and earn a livelihood.

Europe is experiencing a major influx of migrants who have been trying to cross the continent, mostly through illegal means, since the beginning of the Syrian Civil War in 2011 and the spate in the violence caused by the terrorist group, the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria.
