An anti-terror court here on Wednesday sentenced gangster Abu Salem to life imprisonment for the murder of builder Pradeep Jain in 1995.
"Abu Salem and Mehndi Hasan have been convicted for Pradip Jain's murder. Abu Salem had been misleading the law since 1985 but was finally caught in 2005 in Portugal. He tried everything to save himself and finally today he has been sentenced," said lawyer Ujjwal Nikam.
He added that whatever had been agreed between the Government and India and Government of Portugal would not bind the judicial pronouncement.
"Whatever has been agreed between Government and India and Government of Portugal that will not bind the judicial pronouncement but the Government of India has every right to exercise its discretion and to obey the terms and conditions agreed to by the two sovereign countries," he added.
