Greece's Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras has won a snap general election after securing a victory over his conservative rival, despite a chaotic first term in office.

According to The Guardian, Syriza led with a 35.5 percent share of the vote compared to 28 percent for the centre-right New Democracy party.

Tsipras said that it was people's victory and added that a better tomorrow would be achieved with hard work.

Supporters of the party took to the streets, celebrating the victory outside Syriza's main election marquee in central Athens.
