President of Nepal, Ram Baran Yadav, on Sunday announced the adoption of a new 'secular and democratic' Constitution.

The adoption of the new Constitution marks Nepal's transformation from a Hindu monarchy to a secular democracy.

Nepalese legislators adopted the bill in Kathmandu on Wednesday amid violent protest that so far left at least 40 people dead, reported Al Jazeera.

Authorities had imposed curfew in several areas of the Himalayan nation to check violence.

Earlier today, one person was killed and several others sustained injuries when security forces tried to disperse protestors, who had defied the curfew imposed by the authorities.

The protests, which have been going on for weeks, were severe in southern part of the country where certain ethnic minorities were opposing the proposed boundaries of the new provinces.
