While the Microsoft board is reportedly considering replacing Bill Gates with John Thompson as the company's chairman, speculations are rife that the founder may be gearing up for a more active role at Microsoft.

Gates resorted to a less active role after he was replaced by CEO Steve Ballmer in the year 2008.

Meanwhile, Satya Nadella, the expected replacement of current CEO Ballmer, said that he was keen on seeing Gates play a bigger role in product development than administration, the Verge reported.

Nadella is said to be in contract talks, which should clear up things regarding Gates' chairman role in the next few weeks.
