Blocks of flats to be demolished live during Commonwealth Games opening ceremony

Commonwealth Games opening ceremony will reportedly witness the blowing up of blocks of flats which have been a part of Glasgow's skyline for almost 50years.

Five of the six remaining Red Road flats will reportedly be demolished live during the opening ceremony in just 15 seconds, which will the biggest demolition of its kind ever seen in Europe.

According to the BBC, the event will be broadcasted live on a 328 feet wide screen at the ceremony, which will be held at the Celtic Park and also to a huge TV audience.

The 30-storey structures, which were built in the mid 1960s, are reportedly being brough down as part of a Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) regeneration project.

The chairwoman of the Glasgow 2014 ceremonies, culture and Queen's Baton Relay committee Eileen Gallagher said that Glasgow is proving that it is proud of its history but does not stand still, by sharing the final moments of the Red Road flats with the world as part of the opening ceremony.

The original eight tower blocks reportedly housed more than 4,000 people and once used to be the highest flats in Europe.

The first Red Road flat was demolished in June 2012 followed by second demolition in May 2013 and now five of the remaining six will be demolished during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on 23rd July, the report added.
