Mark Wahlberg, who portrays rig worker Mike Williams in 'Deep Horizon', based on the 2010 catastrophic incident of Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, attributed the survivor as a "hero."

"I certainly view him as a hero and think the things that he did were extremely courageous," the 'The Fighter' star expressed in a statement, reports the BBC.

The Peter Berg-directed movie was premiered at the ongoing Toronto film festival, which was graced by Williams himself.

Further speaking about the survivor, Wahlberg said, "He was just doing his job and everything he could to help others and to survive."

The 'Planet of the Apes' star went on to describe Williams as "a very humble guy," who even came down to advising on the film.

"For him (Mark Williams) to be able still be able to relive it with us to make sure it was as accurate as possible takes a special individual," he said.

According to the American actor, 'Deepwater Horizon' is not just an action movie but also "about the people that lost their lives" on the drill rigs.

Meanwhile, Wahlberg promised the audience an "extremely moving and emotional" work regarding the movie which he also says is a "tribute to the 11 people who lost their lives."

'Deepwater Horizon' casts include Kate Hudson, playing Felicia, Mike Williams' wife, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez and John Malkovich.

The movie will hit the theaters in the UK September 29.
