The Delhi High Court on Friday put a stay on the parole release of Uttar Pradesh don Mukhtar Ansari.
The Election Commission had moved the high court against his release on parole.
Ansari had today secured parole from a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court to campaign in his constituency Mau for the state elections.
The EC said it feared Ansari's release may create law and order problems during elections.
Justice Mukta Gupta stayed the parole till Monday and issued a notice to him.
Ansari, who is accused of murdering Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Krishnanand Rai in November 2005, is facing trial before CBI court in Delhi.
Rai, MLA from Mohammadabad constituency was gunned down along with six more persons in Bhanwarkol area in Ghazipur.
After Rai's wife moved court, Supreme Court transferred the case to Delhi from Ghazipur district.
