Pakistan fast bowling legend Wasim Akram has claimed that England can win the World Cup in Australia, after he destroyed their dreams there more than two decades ago.
Mitchell Johnson is not the first left-arm quick bowler to put the frighteners on England around tournament time, as Akram did the same back in 1992. The Pakistani paceman hit a quickfire 33 at the MCG and took 3-49 in a man-of-the-match performance as Pakistan beat England by 22 runs in the World Cup final.
Akram said that maybe it was their tournament, adding that it's almost 23 years since Pakistan has won the World Cup, but insisted that for him and the people back home they remember it like it was just the other day, the Mirror reported.
Akram said that they didn't realise at the time how big it was, adding that it was only when they got back to Pakistan that they realised how proud people were of them. He claimed that when they arrived at Lahore airport the 20-minute drive to the hotel took them seven hours.
Akram said that he believes Pakistan peaked at the right time, and added that who knows which team is going to peak this time, insisting that it could be England.
The former paceman said that England have a very balanced one-day side and if they get runs on the board then he believes they have a good bowling attack that can win games, so he added that they should have a good World Cup.
