The Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) has called on the owners of the Formula One to abandon its 'obsolete and ill-structured' decision-making process, which they said could hamper the progress of the sport.
The GPDA voiced its concerns in a statement, which was signed on by the former world champions Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel as well as chairman and former driver Alex Wurz.
Pointing towards the failure of the new qualifying system that was introduced in this season's first race at the Australian Grand Prix, the GPDA described the recent rule changes as 'disruptive' and said that they do not address the bigger issues the sport was facing and could even jeopardise its future success, news.com.au reported.
"The drivers have come to the conclusion that the decision-making process in the sport is obsolete and ill-structured and prevents progress being made. Indeed, it can sometimes lead to just the opposite, a gridlock," the drivers added.
The same team bosses who had agreed the new format, with the FIA and F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, conceded that it had not worked and the sport should go back to the old system before the next race in Bahrain.
