German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday arrived at the White House, as part of a one-day working trip.

The trip comes days after French President Emmanuel Macron's recent visit.

US President Donald Trump, while welcoming the German Chancellor said in a statement, "It's a great honour to have Chancellor Merkel, and you can rest assured she was going to win that election, and congratulations on winning. It was a great victory. We're working on a lot of different subjects, including trade, including NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation), including military of all types, and we have a really great relationship. And we actually have had a great relationship right from the beginning, but some people didn't understand that. But we understand it, and that's what's important. But a very extraordinary woman. And it's an honour to have you at the White House," CNN reported.

The German Chancellor had a one-on-one meeting with President Trump at the Oval Office, discussing issues of bilateral and global interests. She also discussed the Iran nuclear deal, Germany's military spending and the prospect of US. tariffs on European metals products with the US President, CNBC reported.

A 90-minute lunch session is also scheduled between the German Chancellor and President Trump, followed by a joint press conference.

On Tuesday, the US President threatened to leave the Iran deal, calling it "insane," while adding that "it should have never ever been made."

The Iran nuclear deal was signed between six countries in 2015 - Iran, US, Britain, Germany, Russia, France and China for lifting economic sanctions on Tehran in exchange for limitations to the country's nuclear programme.

This is Merkel's first trip to the US after assuming power as the German Chancellor for a record fourth time last month.
