Harold Ramis, who was best known for his portrayal of ghost-hunter Egon Spengler in the 'Ghostbusters' franchise, has passed away at the age of 69.

The actor's agent told the BBC that he died of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, a rare disease that involves swelling of the blood vessels.

Ramis' family said in a statement that his creativity, compassion, intelligence, humour and spirit will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Several of Ramis' friends, including former costar Bill Murray, had visited him recently.
