Govt. taking measures to meet demand of armed forces infrastructure: Gen. Bikram Singh

Army Chief General Bikram Singh on Monday acknowledged that there is an inadequacy of defence infrastructure, but added that the Central Government is taking steps to meet this demand.

"As far as infrastructure in concerned, there is an inadequacy at the moment. But there are plans afoot to create the infrastructure needed," said General Singh, who was addressing his annual press conference here today.

"There is a conscious effort in terms of improving the infrastructure. There are a number of roads and railway lines which have been identified to be prepared. So, we need focused commitment towards this need," he added.

"In 2010, we had allocation of roughly Rs.9249 crores for the infrastructure development. Additionally, there are Rs. 28000 crores worth of projects, which we hope and expect to be taken up in the 13th Five Year Plan," he said.

"I have been projecting this demand time and again to the government. The government is aware of the problem, and there are initiatives on their part with regard to outsourcing some of these roads to renowned players," he added.

General Singh also said an initiative to revitalize to strengthen the capacity of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will be taken up, so that it can deal with these various projects. (ANI)
