Indian openers put the hosts in a commanding 80-0 at stumps after bowling out South Africa for 214 on the opening day of the second Test in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan eased through the final session as they remained unbeaten on their respective scores of 28 and 45 and put India on course for a large first-innings total.

Opting to bowl first, Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja produced a scintillating performance to bundle out South Africa for a modest score at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Ashwin and Jadeja maintained a complete stranglehold over the tourists by sharing eight wickets.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Varun Aaron claimed the crucial wicket of team captain Hashim Amla for seven.

Batting mainstay AB de Villiers, who is playing in his 100th Test match, provided a solid resistance by scoring a defiant 85 that included 11 boundaries and a six.

Dean Elgar (38) and Morne Morkel (22) were the other notable scorers for South Africa as the Indian spin duo once again bamboozled the tourists in the four-match series.
