Investigation Team foils suicide attack on Pak PM

The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has reportedly foiled a suicide attack aimed at Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The JIT while probing into the abduction of former premier Yousuf Raza Gilani's son, Ali Haider Gilani traced a North Waziristan-based militant group operating in Lahore and also discovered a plot to target Sharif at his residence in Raiwind, The Express Tribune reports.

According to the report, Punjab Inspector General of Police revealed that during investigations a lead surfaced through technical monitoring about a plan to carry out terrorism somewhere in Lahore.

While breaking the suspected terrorist network, JIT reached the terrorist group affiliated with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan North Waziristan-based commanders Matiur Rehman and Muhammad Yasin alias Aslam who were involved in suicide attacks on former President Pervez Musharraf, former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and some other terrorist activities.

A suspect, Faheem Meo, a resident of Raiwind, was found as linked with the terrorist group in Lahore and when he was apprehended he gave the location of another terrorist directly linked with Bannu/NWA based miscreants who was identified as Usman alias Saifullah Mehmood Iqbal, resident of Pajiaan, Raiwind.

The report said that Usman owns land adjacent to the house of Sharif and the JIT learnt through technical monitoring that he had sent a group of 4-5 suicide bombers to Raiwind.

The arms cache to be used by the attackers has not been recovered and the threat still remains, the report added.
