Attempting to ensure that more Indian players are available for auction, the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has recommended that a side can retain only two Indian capped players from the 2017 edition of the tournament.

IPL Governing Council chairperson Rajiv Shukla said that many members have put forth their views upon the players' regulations.

"And there is a suggestion by majority of the members that we should reduce the number of Indian capped players from four to two. And there should be two Indian capped players, two overseas capped players and three uncapped Indian players, but the total number should not exceed five. So, we have reduced the capped Indian players from four to two," he added.

Shukla, who was talking to the media after a meeting of the IPL Governing Council, further said that the logic behind these recommendations was to increase the number of capped Indian players for the auction.

"These players' recommendations are for 2017-2019 seasons and not for the next season," he added.

Earlier, a franchise was entitled to retain a maximum of five players (either capped or uncapped, no more than four of whom may be capped Indians) from its previous squad.
