Iraqi forces have broken a two-month blockade by Islamic State militants on the Shiite town of Amirli, said Iraqi officials on Sunday.
According to Fox News, Iraqi forces entered the town after midday and started the operation at dawn.
Forces said that there had been some causalities but refrained from giving a specific number. They further said that the fighting was still going on in many villages.
Shiite militaia, Kurdish fighter, elite troop and Iraqi army together conducted the operation.
The Amirli town had been under Islamic State militants since July. There has been no supply of electricity and water in the town since the IS militants took power.
The Islamic State group has seized swathes of Iraq and Syria in the recent months and carried out various beheadings.
