Jorhat recently hosted the 9th National Amateur Muay-Thai kickboxing championship where players from across the country participated and showcased their skills.
Around 130 participants from 18 states of the country participated at the 9th National Amateur Muay-Thai kickboxing championship in Jorhat.
In the three-day event organized by all Assam amateur Muay Thai and Fair sports Club of India, participants from the age group of 6 to 22 competed in different categories.
Muay Thai is a combat sport from the Muay martial arts of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques.
The sport is gaining popularity in the northeast where various events are being organized to attract more youth.
"Now a day's whether it is Muay-Thai or any other games, players are being provided facilities in the school and colleges .So, I am thankful for that .Still then I want that whatever games are played in India whether it is recognized or unrecognized equal facilities should be provided," said Rakesh Meetei, President, Indian Amateur Boxing Federation.
A team from Assam won the championship both in amateur and open category while Tamil Nadu remained the runners up.
"They have organized it very well and I feel good playing here. I hope the federation will organize more events in the future so that the players can do well and can bring laurels for our country," said Debashish Laskar, a player from Assam.
"I am playing for the first time at a professional level and I felt good. I hope that in the future I will be able to perform better," added Bijoy Borah, another player from Assam.
The northeast region has abundant talent in sports. Better facilities and infrastructure will help the players to hone their skills.
