The controversial 'Mankad' dismissal of England's Jos Buttler at the hands of Sri Lanka's Sachithra Senanayake during the final ODI of the five-match series that supposedly affronted to the 'spirit' of cricket has raised a debate amongst players over the issue.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan said that he blames Sri Lanka's captain Angelo Mathews for Buttler's run out, as the skipper could have called the wicketkeeper-batsman back and set the tone, adding that an international captain should tell his bowler that they should just go with the game.

According to Sport24, former England spinner Graeme Swann tweeted that he feels the Mankad is just wrong even though it is not illegal, adding that it is like cuddling ones sister while watching a film.

Moreover Australian captain Michael Clarke said that at the end of the day he feels that as long as the player is warned it is obviously in the rules so one can make whatever decisions one wants.

Meanwhile, former England captain Mike Atherton said that the cat-calls, boos and whistles that accompanied Buttler's return to England's dressing room after being 'Mankaded' by Senanayake, illustrates just how far the wooly notion of the spirit of cricket has confused things.

Buttler's dismissal falls within law 42.15, which states that the bowler is permitted, before releasing the ball and provided he has not completed his usual delivery swing, to attempt to run out the non-striker, the report added.
