Mamata Banerjee flags off 35 trucks with relief material for Nepal

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday flagged off 35 trucks with relief material for earthquake victims in Nepal and dubbed the action as a 'social and moral obligation'.

"We have friendly relations with Nepal. It is our social and moral obligations to be with them. I have told a Nepalese minister that we pay our condolences to the victim's families," Banerjee told the media.

Nepal Urban Development Minister Dr. Narayan Kharke, who was also present at the ceremony, expressed gratitude towards the government of West Bengal and Mamata Banerjee for their gesture.

"On the behalf of Nepal government, I would like to express my gratitude to the government and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. We are thankful for getting such support," Kharke said.

The death toll following the devastating earthquake that rattled the Himalayan nation of Nepal a week ago has crossed 7,000.

An earthquake of 5.2 magnitude hit the country yesterday following which there was panic among the people, who scrambled for open spaces.
