Mathews not in favour of points system

Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews has disapproved the plan to introduce a points system for his side's upcoming tour to England, saying he doesn't want to move away from the traditions of the game.

Mathews' comments came after the former England skipper Michael Vaughan slammed the new points system by describing the proposal a needless 'over-complication'.

According to the proposal made by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), each format would carry a weight of certain points and a winner would be judged at the end of the tour after aggregating the results of all the international fixtures.

The scheme is proposed for the series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan and the ECB are holding talks with the cricket boards of both the countries regarding the matter.

The 28-year-old, however, admitted his side have to go ahead with whatever would be the decision of the administrators, Sport24 reported.

Lanka will be without the services of key players like Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene in the series starting from May 19, who have retired from international cricket.

The two sides will play three Tests, five ODIs, and a one-off T20 international, starting at Headingley Carnegie in Leeds.
