President Pranab Mukherjee has condoled the passing away of Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, former Maharaja of Travancore.
In a condolence message, Mukherjee said, "The Maharaja was an erudite scholar and a man of varied interests. He was immensely popular and always concerned about the upliftment and well-being of the poor and disadvantaged sections of society."
"His contribution towards the welfare of the people of Travancore as patron of numerous hospitals and charities shall always be remembered," he added.
Marthanda Varma, the titular head of the Travancore royal family passed away due to age-related complications on Monday. He was 91.
