The National Legal Services Authority of India (NALSA), has appointed noted social reformer, activist, and founder of Sulabh International, Dr Bindeshwar Pathak as its member.
The nomination for the post of the member of NALSA was notified in the Gazette by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice.
Under the rules of the National Legal Services Authority, the Central Government, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, nominated former Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court Justice Virendra Singh and Pathak as members of the NALSA.
NALSA, constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, provides free legal services to weaker sections of society. It also organises Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.
The aim is to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reasons of economic or other disabilities.
On the encouragement by Supreme Court through NALSA, Sulabh took up the programme for improving the living conditions of the widows of Vrindavan and Varanasi.
Dr Pathak is an Indian sociologist. He is the founder of Sulabh International, an social service organization which works to promote human rights, environmental sanitation, waste management and social reforms through education.
He is the Brand Ambassador for Swachh Rail Mission of Indian Railways.
His work is considered pioneering in social reform, especially in the field of sanitation and hygiene. He received various national and international awards for his work with this organization.
