Freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose's grand nephew Chandra Kumar Bose on Friday claimed that former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru was wary of Netaji's return, fearing that the Indian National Army founder would lead the country.

Chandra's statements followed reports that Nehru had ordered a surveillance on Netaji's family from 1948 to 1968.

"This is a very shocking revelation not only for the members of the Bose family, but also for the people of this great nation... Pandit Nehru knew that Subhash Bose did not die in any air crash on August 18, 1945. And somehow, Pandit Nehru feared that if Subhash Bose returns to India, then he would be the leader of the nation. He would lead the country. It's shocking that Subhash Bose's family would be kept under surveillance in independent India," Chandra told ANI.

"It is our demand... that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government unravel the mystery of Subhash Bose's disappearance... The government should immediately order a judicial inquiry under a Supreme Court judge to come to the bottom of this," he added.

Earlier in the day, media reports stated that two recently declassified IB files have revealed that the Nehru-led Congress government spied on the Netaji's kin between 1948 and 1968.

The files reveal that the IB had resumed British-era surveillance on the two Bose family homes in Calcutta at Woodburn Park and Elgin Road.
