Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the Congress had no escape from stepping down from power as the people had already decided to bid them a farewell.

"The Congress leaders think of this country to be their private property but now the people of this country have decided to give Congress a farewell. They cannot escape from stepping down from power," said Modi.

"Who is responsible for this situation in Assam today? Who is responsible for the killing of youth? With peace, unity and brotherhood, we have to choose the path of development," he said.

"You have given the country its prime minister but what have they given you in return. You have been sending a PM to the Parliament for the last 22 years, but what have got?" he asked.

He further said that the people of Assam had the right to question the prime minister who had failed to develop the north east.

"The people of Assam have the right to question the PM. If he cannot do anything for you, what will he do for the country? Why has he failed to develop north east region of the country?" asked Modi.

"Even the per capita revenue is the lowest in Assam, and there is no means of employment for the youth here. The Congress keeps praising NREGA all the time and always cites NREGA when asked about anything, but it is just hype. Has anyone earned employment out of this?" he asked.

"If you want to bring change, you need to change your thoughts as well. Had former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee become the prime minister in 2004, the north-east would have been developed today," he added.
